Blogging For SEO & Link Building

The fall of guest blogging for SEO

If you’re using guest blogging as a way to gain links in 2014, you should probably stop.

Why is that? I’ll tell you why! Because over time it’s become a more and more spammy practice, and if you’re doing a lot of guest blogging then you’re hanging out with really bad company, and no-one wants that!!

Look, to be honest, a long time ago guest blogging was a practice that was used all the time, guest blogging used to be a respectable thing, I’m guilty of it myself, it was a fantastic strategy for gaining great back links, but as the internet marketing/SEO industry grows, and Google gets smarter, it’s just not that way any more. Not pointing the finger at any particular country, but, there is a definite trend of blog comments coming from international countries, especially where large corporations have call centres……get my drift?

If you employ such services, be very careful, you WILL get caught out eventually! If you receive any emails offering money to get links that pass Page Rank, then they clearly do not understand the importance of what they are playing with. Doing this is a clear violation of Google’s quality guidelines, and if your SEO/Bloggers are dropping spammy links into a post, then I wish you well, because it’s a slippery slope. Ultimately, this is why it’s an ever changing landscape in the SEO space: a trend starts out as authentic, then becomes abused and obsolete. So as far as I’m concerned, and industry leaders, guest blogging is done; it’s just gotten too dangerous and spammy.

I would not recommend accepting any guest blog post unless you are willing to vouch for someones personally or know them well, personally and in business. Likewise, I would not recommend relying on guest posting, guest blogging sites, or guest blogging SEO as a link building strategy from any companies offering this service, you will pay with more than just money, it could be your website that gets penalised. I think it was by mid-2013, a heap of people saw the clear trend towards guest blogging being overused by a bunch of low-quality, spammy sites, and moved away to pursue more relevant, quality links.

So there you have it…… the decay of a great, once-authentic way to reach people, which is a real shame, because it used to be so easy. Oh well, it just means we as internet marketers must continually seek other opportunities and research.

Given how spammy it has now become, I would expect Google’s webspam team to take a pretty dim view of guest blogging going forward, so please be careful. There are still many good reasons to do some guest blogging (exposure, branding, increased reach, community, etc.). Those reasons existed way before Google and they’ll continue into the future. And there are absolutely some fantastic, high-quality guest bloggers out there.

So in short, be careful, do your research and keep within the quality guidelines of Google, because trust me, the last person you want to annoy is Google, especially when you have your online business at their mercy.
